PINE FLATWOODS PLANTS
BARRIER ISLAND PLANT LISTS

• Plants of natural origin inevitably congregate:
1) on sites that can provide the soil, water, and climate necessary for them to thrive
2) among other plants that contribute to and/or do not threaten their existence.

• Consequently, a different group of plants will occur naturally in each area that differs in soil type and fertility, water availability, and climate.

• These groups, or plant associations and the smaller plant communities responding to variations within them define the natural botanical identity of each place on the planet.

• And though they are naturally consistent within their core, their perimeters merge, resulting in the seamless tapestry of richness and diversity that Nature is.

• Although this website is primarily devoted to the landscape of the Central Florida Gulfcoast barrier islands, it is instructive to note the differences and similarities between the island vegetation and that of the mainland just across the bay in the Pine Flatwoods Plant Association.

Like the island plante, these will in some locations self-divide themselves further into a succession of separate communities, particularly between the shoreline and mainland or between the drier high lands and lower flood-prone areas. Keep in mind that the divisions between associations and communities are not precise:

1) the plant lists of each can merge in areas of transition, and
2) the ability of these plants to survive beyond their natural zones varies widely.

In this respect, to achieve an authentic sense of place, it is imperative that the overwhelming majority of plants in one's palette be from the list specifically associated with the site and that no exotic species be included except within a garden clearly distinct from the natural landscape.
